By Kim Morales, Family Services AmeriCorps member Do you love helping people? Do you love getting out of your comfort zone and try new things? Do you love taking on responsibility? Do you love working with people who are all working towards the same goal? Have you always wanted to get into a new field but wanted to test it out first? Are you entirely unsure of what you want in life and just searching for an answer? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, Habitat AmeriCorps is just for you! Like you, I love helping people, love trying new things, and wanted to try out a new career while being surrounded by people who were all working towards the same goal. My term with Habitat MontDelco has surpassed all of my expectations and helped me reach all of my goals. While serving, I have been able to create connections with the local Hispanic community, experience a home dedication, help with family selection for the next 2 homes, experience our financial courses and help with a pilot partnership, and essentially learn as much as I could about every aspect of our field. Much of this is possible because of our amazing team. This year has been amazing. I have always felt like I was apart of the staff here, I wasn’t treated differently due to the AmeriCorps title, my voice mattered and was heard, and my work with the team was always appreciated. Another thing I have loved about my year is being able to see all parts of the organization. I have been lucky enough to not only see the family services side of things, I was able experience some marketing, volunteer recruitment, and even construction thanks to Build-a-Thon! For me Build-a-Thon is one of the best parts of being a Habitat AmeriCorps member, getting to travel somewhere new for a week and meet all of the Habitat AmeriCorps members from all over the country and be apart building so many homes is amazing! As an office member it was very nice to experience and learn about building homes. Meeting the future homeowners added an extra level of impact for me on such a deep level. Being able to see first hand the happiness on the homeowners faces and in their hearts and know that you are helping to create that, is one of the best feelings in the world. This year of service has answered the one question I have always had about my career path, Habitat for Humanity has my heart and it is where I want to stay.
